There is no way to put this gently. September 4 marked the official start of New York Fashion Week's ready-to-wear shows, but did not do so with a bang. Several collections presented seemingly lacklustre efforts. Essentially, it appeared that almost every designer created a collection with the sole notion of consumerism in mind. There seemed to be very little colour, and the mesh hockey-net fabric found its 15 minutes of fame in an overwhelming amount of shows. If I had to choose one winner for the first day, though, it would be Marissa Webb, who chose different silhouettes, fabrics and textures to compliment the every day woman. Tome's show was also a breath of fresh air, while BCBG's highly publicized show was a decent display of flowy fabrics and a spring palette, but nothing unpredictable. September 5, however, was an entirely different story. As one of my favourite Fashion Week days in recent memory, renowned and up-and-coming designers alike brought their A-game: textures, colours, silhouettes and fabrics all came in vast droves and were presented in cool, unique ways. Each designer brought their distinct style, with no two collections blurring into one another. First Lady Michelle Obama donning multiple Jason Wu gowns have made his shows fan favourites, but it was Tanya Taylor who stole the day. The show could be one of my favourites in Fashion Week history. Her collection was fun, bright, and had at least one garment that appealed to every woman. It was fun, it was professional, and it was casual and dressy all rolled into one. Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B collection also shone, mixing Stefani's signature rock style with more feminine colours and patterns. Below is a gallery of my favourite looks from September 5:
