I'm trying something new, where I will recap last week's style through pictures, and insert my own opinions. I'm trying to make more time to blog, so we'll see how this works out. Unfortunately, I picked a pretty boring week in fashion to start this, but here goes nothing.
The concept behind Nicole Ritchie's dress is a good one, in my opinion. I like the bright colour, the interesting cut (there's a drop back as well) and the lace, but I can't help but feel like she accidentally shredded off the bottom hemline. Something feels unfinished and pulled together last minute to me. And, although I love the red, I don't think its the most flattering colour on Ritchie. All the business overpowers her small frame and we lose her in it, and can't stop staring (squinting?) at the dress itself.
The simplicity behind Amy Adams' look here is simply stunning. The navy blue Oscar de la Renta number perfectly complements her red hair and fair complexion, but the mesh top adds a level of interest and uniqueness, in a playfully classy way. The simplicity in the accessories is also a nice touch, adding only gold earrings to complete an elegant ensemble.
Kristen Cavallari looks amazingly classy in these baggy shorts and an off-white drape blouse. Because the blouse has a slightly pink hue, it matches the belt and also complements the shorts, and the nude heels leave Cavallari not detracting from her focal point bottoms. Her hair is also loose and relaxed, evoking an effortlessly put-together sense of style, complete with a trendy pop of colour.
Cavallari's "The Hills" counterpart, Heidi Montag, completely missed the classy memo with this outfit. She completely abandoned the "less is more" concept and leaves almost no skin to the imagination. I guess she's flattering her mostly surgery-enhanced figure, but it feels like a desperate cry for mouth-watering attention. Insert eye roll.
This is my last critique of a "Hills" alum, I promise. Lauren Conrad rocks an almost universally flattering a-line dress, but makes it her own by donning it in leather. She makes the fabric the focal point by adding black pumps, and completes the look with a simple, wavy ponytail. Adding an edge to her otherwise girly look was a stroke of genius.
While Katie Holmes' personal life may be attracting the attention of many lately, her outfit certainly isn't. The all black ensemble is painfully boring. There's no colour in her accessories or even on her face to attract attention to herself, and even her hairstyle is something we've seen before. I would've liked a colour (any colour, really) somewhere in the blackness to show SOME personality. Yawn.
Mandy Moore made a heck of a departure from feminine, flirty dresses this week, rocking a killer leather jacket, skin tight jeans, and a bold, matching red lips/bag combination. Even her facial expression exudes confidence, and though her look is the edgy girl's uniform, why fix something that ain't broken? Especially since its such a step out of Mandy's style box. She should consider adopting this look and wearing it everywhere. Literally.
