According to people.com, these are 7 of the 14 hottest trends for the upcoming winter season. Needless to say, I find it necessary to voice my opinion on them.
1. Sequin Skirts
As much as I love Blake Lively and think she's stunning, this outfit isn't working for me. The trend itself is not a bad one, but I'm a sucker for anything sequined and shiny. This ensemble itself, however, does Lively no justice. She normally has such a classy, put together Hollywood style but, quite frankly, I have no idea what's going on here. What bothers me, first and foremost, is the fact that you can see the bottom of her shirt sticking out from the skirt. And, the belt maneuvered in such an odd way detracts from the statement piece (the skirt) itself. I think that this trend could work when done right, but could have much worse outcomes than this when done wrong. With such a busy focal point, I would probably pair it with something a lot more simple than what Blake has done. That being said, I wouldn't hesitate to try this trend for myself.

2. Colourful Heels
It astonishes me that I have not one bad thing to say about this trend. Despite being a typical pessimist, I completely adore this trend in its entirety, and love the way Carey Mulligan brings it to the forefront with this outfit. The simple elegance of this outfit is contrasted by the pop of the shoes, helping Ms. Mulligan to prove herself yet again as a prominent figure in the world of fashion. She knows what she's doing, proving her eye time and time again, and this outfit does just that. The powder blue does a remarkable job at standing out from the rest of the ensemble. This is a trend I would most certainly stick to this winter.

3. Embellished Clutches
Like I said before, I'm a sucker for embellishment, and Hilary Duff proves why by wearing this trend. She adds glam to her otherwise simple attire through a multiculoured sequined clutch and a large, gold necklace. She has done sequins right with this peice, only adding the embellished clutch as a focal point to the simple outfit. Beware of the business, when mixed with a lot of other busy peices, the addition of this trend could just as easily be the downfall of an outfit. Personally, I would not hesitate to add an embellished clutch to an LBD, just as Hilary has done.

4. Black Lace
Finally, a trend I dislike. Jessica Biel took this trend way too far, pairing black lace with yet another black, textured item and plain, black heels. I personally do not see the allure of black lace, especially for such a young, vibrant actress. Lace in general has always reminded me of grandmothers, and Jessica looks especially matronly in this ensemble. There is nothing that stands out, and it carries even through her newly dark tresses. She is enveloped in black textures, which does nothing for her. Maybe if Rachel Bilson or someone of her style paired a lace shirt with jeans and red heels, this trend would present itself differently to me. But, as of right now, I'm not seeing it.

5. Encrusted Cuffs
Oh, the bling being presented this winter. I am personally a huge fan of encrusted cuffs, and have been for a while. Sarah Jessica Parker brings focus to her wrists by adding a bright bangle, but it is taken away from by the vibrancy of the rest of the outfit. SJP is known for her daring style, but, in this case, she has overdone it. Pairing the cuff with the dress alone would have sufficed, but adding the bright, tomato red shoes, the large necklace and the purple clutch leave the eye searching for a focal point. If it were me, I would have toned down the rest of the accessories, pairing the dress and cuff with nude shoes, a nude clutch, and a simple necklace. Adding an encrusted cuff to the ensemble brings another thing to stare at, instead of making SJP's wrist THE thing to stare at. If done right, I can definitely see the appeal of the trend.

6. Flared Denim
To be honest, I've always been a fan of skinny jeans. Quite bluntly, I don't see why flared denim is becoming such a trend. Granted, it is more comfortable than form-fitting skinnies, but that's the only positive thing I can say about them. To me, they hide your figure when you should be embracing it, and Katherine Heigl is far too young to look as frumpy as she does in this outfit. She is tall and slender, the perfect body for skinny jeans. Why she chose to pair a baggy shirt with baggy jeans is beyond me.

7. Patterned Tights
To be honest, I'm still undecided about this trend. I know for a fact that I don't like the way this outfit looks, as I think that there is far too much going on for a petite woman such as Leighton Meester (as Gossip Girl's Blair Waldorf) to carry. If the shoes were a solid colour, or the coat was a solid black or white, I might see this outfit differently. In the case of this trend, I really think its presentation depends on the wearer, and the rest of the outfit. For me, this just isn't cutting it, and I can't see myself trying it.
